Tennessee has received a substantial payment of $146.1 million from major tobacco companies under the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement, as announced by Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti. Since the agreement's inception in 1998, Tennessee has collected a total of $3.9 billion.

Attorney General Skrmetti stated, "One of my favorite parts of my job is protecting Tennessee kids from abusive corporate power, following in the footsteps of my distinguished predecessors." He added, "For decades now, our office has worked hard to ensure that Big Tobacco colors inside the lines and pays for its past misconduct. This year, we are proud to deliver another $146 million to the State of Tennessee."

The settlement addressed a lawsuit against major tobacco companies over violations related to consumer protection laws and deceptive marketing practices that led to increased healthcare costs for the state.

Skrmetti and his team are tasked with enforcing this agreement and regulating tobacco businesses within Tennessee. Their ongoing efforts focus on ensuring compliance with both state and federal tobacco regulations.

The terms of the settlement provide annual payments to Tennessee and 51 other states and U.S. territories, which help cover healthcare expenses linked to smoking-related illnesses. The agreement also includes public health measures such as restrictions on youth marketing, sales of branded merchandise, and sponsorships at entertainment and sporting events.

Additionally, the Attorney General’s Office maintains a Tobacco Hotline for reporting issues related to youth-targeted marketing or underage sales. The hotline can be reached at (615) 532-9480 locally or (800) 890-8366.
