Attorney General Josh Stein recognized several individuals from southeastern North Carolina with the Attorney General’s Dogwood Award. This award acknowledges contributions to improving health, safety, and well-being in the community.
District Attorney Jon David was honored for his work on North Carolina’s Fentanyl Task Force and efforts to prevent child abuse and prosecute violent crimes. “I appreciate his commitment to keeping the people of Bladen, Brunswick, and Columbus Counties safe,” said Stein. David expressed gratitude, stating, “Our success in combatting the opioid crisis... depends heavily on our enduring partnership with the Attorney General’s Office.”
Sheriff Alan Cutler received recognition for his office's efforts in addressing the fentanyl crisis in Pender County. Stein noted their role in saving lives by removing dangerous drugs from streets. Sheriff Cutler credited his personnel's hard work for this achievement.
Chief Robert Malloy was posthumously honored for his pioneering career as Laurinburg’s first Black police chief. Stein highlighted Malloy's legacy through his mentorship of other law enforcement officers.
Captain Steve Hunt was acknowledged for bravery in saving a man during a mental health crisis. “We ask our first responders to run toward danger instead of away from it,” commented Stein.
Rep. Ted Davis was recognized for modernizing sex crime laws to protect children. He mentioned successful legislation filed to address physical and sexual abuse and human trafficking.
The founders of Shibumi Shade — Dave Barnes, Scott Barnes, and Alex Slater — were celebrated for their innovation that enhances beach experiences. They expressed gratitude for support from North Carolina families.
