Judge Ana Escobar, a member of the 20th Judicial District General Sessions Court, has built her career in Nashville, Tennessee. Growing up in Music City, she attended high school locally and graduated from Vanderbilt University before pursuing law at George Washington University.

Initially unsure of her career path, Judge Escobar was drawn to criminal law through an internship with the Nashville Public Defender’s Office that required Spanish-speaking skills. "I thought I wanted to be a lobbyist," she recalled. "That’s when I fell in love with criminal law."

Her professional journey includes roles as a solo practitioner, public defender, district attorney, deputy director of the Administrative Office of the Courts, and metro clerk. However, she consistently returned to criminal law. She led domestic violence cases during her last tenure at the DA’s office and ran for a judgeship after an unsuccessful appointment attempt.

Elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2022, Judge Escobar brings extensive experience with domestic violence cases. "I am very happy," she stated about her role. "It takes a lot of courage for someone to come to court and accuse a loved one."

Her ability to speak Spanish has been advantageous throughout her career. It enabled her participation in international prosecutions and provided dual roles as interpreter and lawyer in private practice. On the bench, it helps ease communication barriers for Spanish-speaking individuals.

Judge Escobar values mentoring aspiring legal professionals by encouraging community involvement. She is also recognized as a 2019 Academy for Women of Achievement honoree for her leadership and service contributions.

Proudly holding the distinction of being Tennessee's first elected Hispanic judge, Judge Escobar aims to inspire future generations. "Hopefully... they will hopefully put their name in the ring for this or for any kind of political position," she said.

Beyond her judicial duties, Judge Escobar actively participates on various boards and committees across Tennessee. Her engagement allows her to understand diverse community challenges better.

In summary, Judge Escobar remains committed to serving people through understanding cultural nuances while fostering diversity within the legal system.
