Today, Judge Darrel James Papillion of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana issued a ruling on a lawsuit challenging FEMA's rate increases for the National Flood Insurance Program. The court decided that all but one of the claims could proceed.
The decision acknowledged the potential harm these rates might cause to policyholders in Louisiana and across the country. Attorney General Liz Murrill expressed disappointment with the ruling, stating: "The National Flood Insurance program is a disaster. We are disappointed in the ruling, which elevated the government’s admittedly flawed program over people who are facing the loss of their homes and their communities at the hands of FEMA."
Despite this setback, Murrill remains determined as litigation continues. She added, "Our fight is not over yet. As we move through the next phases of litigation, we’re hopeful the courts will recognize FEMA’s unlawful behavior and hold it accountable."
