The Justice Department has initiated legal action against Fitness International LLC, known as LA Fitness, alleging disability discrimination at its gym and fitness clubs. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. It accuses LA Fitness of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which mandates equal access to public accommodations, including gyms and fitness centers, for individuals with disabilities.

According to the lawsuit, LA Fitness has failed to provide accessible services and facilities by not removing architectural barriers and maintaining necessary accessible features. The ADA also prohibits imposing additional charges on people with disabilities. Despite these requirements, the department claims that many LA Fitness locations have obstacles preventing members with disabilities from accessing pools and fitness equipment. Issues such as broken pool lifts and elevators have reportedly left some members unable to enter facilities or use pools.

Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke stated, "Access to physical fitness activity is crucial for promoting the health and well-being of all Americans, including those with disabilities." She emphasized that for over 30 years, the ADA has required gyms like LA Fitness to ensure equal opportunities for patrons with disabilities.

U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada added, "Ensuring accessibility is key to safeguarding civil rights for all Americans." He affirmed his office's commitment to enforcing ADA protections to guarantee public accommodation access for people with disabilities.

The Justice Department seeks a court order requiring LA Fitness to stop discriminatory practices and make its facilities accessible. Additionally, it requests monetary damages for individuals affected by these barriers and those who were charged extra fees for assistance in using LA Fitness facilities.

Individuals experiencing difficulties accessing an LA Fitness gym due to disability-related issues are encouraged to contact the department via a toll-free number or email provided in their announcement.
