Fire investigation underway in Schofield after fatal apartment blaze

The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fire that occurred in Schofield, Wisconsin. The incident took place on Monday morning, October 7, 2024.

The Riverside Fire District responded to the blaze at an apartment complex located on the 600 block of Grand Avenue around 4:41 a.m. Several adults sustained injuries; one was hospitalized, and another was found deceased.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is spearheading the investigation into the fire's cause and origin. Multiple agencies collaborated with Riverside Fire District at the scene, including Kronenwetter Fire Department, City of Wausau Fire Department, Easton Fire Department, Ringle Fire Department, Marathon City Fire Department, Mosinee Fire Department, SAFER, Mountain Bay Police, Red Cross, and Salvation Army.

"The nature of fire investigations requires significant time to reach a final determination," officials stated. They requested patience as they work to uncover the facts surrounding the case.

All media inquiries are being directed to the Wisconsin DOJ.
