Governor Kim Reynolds will administer the ceremonial oath of office to Judge John Sandy, newly appointed to the Iowa Court of Appeals. The investiture ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. It will take place in the Iowa Supreme Court Courtroom at the Iowa Judicial Branch Building in Des Moines.

Judge Sandy was appointed to the Court of Appeals in June 2024, filling a vacancy left by Chief Judge Thomas Bower's retirement. His academic journey began with an undergraduate degree from the University of St. Thomas in 2007, followed by a law degree from its School of Law in 2010, where he held the position of editor-in-chief for the Journal of Law & Public Policy and graduated with Dean's honors.

Following his education, Judge Sandy worked as a 1st Assistant Public Defender in Minnesota and later became a shareholder and managing partner at Sandy Law Firm, P.C., where he focused on trial practice. In March 2021, he was appointed as an Iowa district court judge. Raised and educated in Spirit Lake, Judge Sandy is affiliated with both the Iowa and Minnesota State Bar Associations and is a member of the Iowa Judges Association.

For media wishing to cover the event fully equipped with cameras or recording devices, it is advised to arrive twenty minutes early. Additional requirements can be directed to Steve Davis at [email protected].
