United Illuminating has announced its intention to seek another rate hike, aiming for $105 million in new revenues. If approved by the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority, this increase would raise electric bills by 9.3 percent overall and elevate the distribution rate by 34 percent.

Attorney General William Tong issued a statement criticizing the proposed rate hike. "This revenue grab is a tone-deaf slap in the face to Connecticut families," said Tong. He emphasized that current electric rates are already high and consumers cannot afford further increases.

Tong pointed out that United Illuminating had requested and received a revenue increase just last year. However, their application for $130.7 million was not fully granted as it was deemed exorbitant and unsupported by evidence. "They’ve been stomping their feet ever since," he added.

The Attorney General vowed to scrutinize every aspect of the pending application and to oppose it on behalf of Connecticut families and businesses. "I am going to scrutinize every penny of this pending application and will fight at every step of this process," he stated.
