The Honorable Justice Jeffrey P. Victory, a retired Louisiana Supreme Court Justice, passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2024, in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was 78 years old.

Justice Victory was elected as an Associate Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court for a 10-year term starting on January 1, 1995. He was re-elected for a second term beginning in 2005 and retired from the court on December 31, 2014, after serving for two decades. During his tenure, he was a charter member of the Louisiana Sentencing Commission and served as a director and board chair of the Louisiana Judicial College. He also served on the Supreme Court’s Internal Audit Committee and frequently lectured on ethics issues. In October 2014, he received the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Legal Reform’s Judicial Leadership Achievement Award.

Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice John L. Weimer expressed his condolences: “I am immensely saddened by the passing of my friend, mentor, and colleague Justice Jeffrey Victory. My thoughts and prayers are with him; his lovely wife, Nancy, who is also a dear friend; and his family.” Weimer added that despite occasional disagreements in their judicial opinions, they always maintained mutual respect: “We never allowed our divergent views...to become disagreeable.”

Justice Victory was born in Shreveport on January 29, 1946. He graduated from Byrd High School in 1963 and earned a B.A. degree in History and Government from Centenary College in 1967. He then attended Tulane University School of Law on a Regional Scholarship where he joined the Special Forces Airborne unit of the Louisiana National Guard while studying law.

He began his judicial career in 1981 when he was elected to the First Judicial District Court. In 1990, he was elected to the Second Circuit Court of Appeal before becoming an Associate Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court in January 1995.

Justice Victory was affiliated with several legal organizations including the National Lawyers Association and various bar associations at local and state levels. He has been inducted into both C.E. Byrd High School Hall of Fame and Centenary College Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife Dr. Nancy Clark Victory; children Paul Bradford Victory (and wife Michelle), William Peter Victory; Judge Christopher Thomas Victory; daughter Mary Kathryn Victory (and her sons Jameson Walters and Prescott Walters).

The family requests donations be made to Broadmoor Baptist Church, Care Pregnancy Center, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, or Louisiana Family Forum instead of flowers.
