Sotheby’s Institute of Art features Shook Co-Chair of the Art Law Practice Channah Norman, in “A Look Into Art Law With Senior Counsel Channah Norman.” In the Q&A, Norman answers questions on her experiences as an art student, her business background, her expansive art experience, her work as an art educator, and her work in business law at Shook.

“As co-chair of the Art Law Practice,” Norman states, “I advise clients on a broad range of matters arising in the art world.”

Norman, who earned a Master of Arts, with distinction, in Art Business from Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London, was asked how her diverse background, including an earlier career in private equity, has informed her art law practice.

“In addition to this knowledge of how different art market participants operate,” says Norman, “the private equity experience informs my legal practice in the art market as it relates to art financing and investing in art assets.”

Sotheby’s Institute of Art is considered a pioneer in art business studies. Norman decided to study there after receiving an art history degree at Cornell University. As co-chair of Shook’s Art Law Practice, Norman advises clients on issues relating to art and cultural property law. She is an experienced business and legal advisor on museums, cultural property, the art market, art and intellectual property, and restitution and repatriation.
