North Dakota Attorney General seeks Deputy Solicitor General

The Office of the North Dakota Attorney General has announced an opening for the position of Deputy Solicitor General. The role, based in Bismarck, ND, is full-time and comes with a state benefit package. Applications are being accepted from both internal and external candidates until September 24, 2024.

Philip Axt, Solicitor General, will supervise the selection process. The Deputy Solicitor General will focus on constitutional issues, appellate advocacy, and litigation against the Federal Government. Responsibilities include conducting legal research on constitutional law, drafting legal briefs and motions, staying updated on national legal developments impacting the state’s interests, assisting in developing litigation strategies, advocating in courts including the North Dakota Supreme Court and federal courts nationwide, managing counsel retained by the state for additional support, and other duties as assigned.

Candidates must be licensed to practice law in North Dakota or another state with plans to seek admission to the North Dakota bar within one year. Other qualifications include high academic or professional achievement, excellent legal research skills using Westlaw and other tools, strong written and verbal communication skills, dedication to significant time commitments required by the position, ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise independent judgment, high ethical standards with a clean discipline record, harmonious working relationships with supervisors and colleagues, successful completion of interviews and background checks.

Preferred but not required experiences include prior appellate brief writing and oral argument experience as well as managing complex litigation.
