Obituary: Lynn E. Crooks passes away at age 83

Lynn Edward Crooks, 83, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2024, after battling heart disease for several years. Born on July 17, 1941, on a farm near Hankison, ND to Orra and Ervin Crooks, Lynn had a distinguished career and life.

Lynn excelled academically and athletically in high school as a football halfback and co-captain. He graduated as a co-salutatorian before attending NDSU for two years and then transferring to UND to study law. His legal career began as a Special Assistant Attorney General for North Dakota and later as an Assistant US Attorney in Fargo until his retirement in 2002.

Throughout his career, Lynn was involved in numerous criminal prosecutions requiring contested trials. Notable cases included those against Leonard Peltier and Gordon Kahl, both of which garnered national attention.

In recognition of his contributions, the Governor of South Dakota William Janklow declared May 3, 2002, as "Lynn Crooks Day." Lynn also received the Outstanding Assistant U.S. Attorney of the Year award from the National Association of Former U.S. Attorneys and twice earned the Director’s Award for Superior Achievement.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Lynn cherished family life with his wife Nancy and their children Mark and Lori. He was known for his storytelling ability, sense of humor, generosity, and community involvement through Hope Lutheran Church, the Masonic Lodge, and El Zagel Shrine.

Lynn enjoyed reading, learning, hunting, fishing, and family vacations. His legacy is marked by kindness, humor, and service.

He is survived by his daughter Lori (Dan) Traiser; grandchildren Kristin Traiser of Mayer MN; Jenna Traiser of Fargo ND; Erik Traiser of Fargo ND; daughter-in-law Sharon Ponik; sister Mary (Dave) Kluge; brother Richard Crooks; sisters-in-law Joan Crooks; Cindy Crooks; brother-in-law Richard Koehler; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy; son Mark Ponik; grandson Louis West.
