North Dakota Insurance Department seeks attorney for administrative role

The North Dakota Insurance Department has announced a job opening for an attorney. The department's mission is to oversee the insurance marketplace, safeguard promises made to consumers by insurance companies, and foster a fair and thriving marketplace. The position involves collaborating with staff, criminal and civil investigators, and fellow attorneys to prepare administrative and criminal cases for enforcement and prosecution.

Responsibilities include providing legal advice to the Insurance Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, and other department employees; advising agency staff on legal matters; drafting legislation and legal documents; representing the department in various hearings; educating staff about insurance fraud laws; establishing relationships with judiciary members, attorneys, county officials, and law enforcement; investigating regulatory violations; conducting legal research related to insurance fraud; responding to inquiries from the public and industry professionals; negotiating settlements of complaints; assisting with regulatory examinations of insurance companies; coordinating work with state’s attorneys and regulators in other states as well as federal agencies; keeping up-to-date on relevant issues and participating in national committee meetings.

Minimum qualifications for applicants include a Juris Doctorate degree, pending or completed North Dakota Bar exam results or eligibility for North Dakota Bar admission by motion, high ethical standards, experience as an attorney working collaboratively with non-attorneys, excellent written and verbal communication skills. Preferred qualifications involve knowledge of state and federal regulatory law, legislative drafting skills, strong interpersonal skills, good judgment, reliability, time management skills, organization skills, and possibly experience in criminal law.
