Wisconsin DOJ investigates officer-involved shooting in Fitchburg

The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. The incident occurred on the morning of Monday, August 12, 2024.

At approximately 8:00 a.m., Fitchburg police officers responded to a disturbance call at a residence on the 800 block of Whispering Pines Way. Upon arrival, they were approached by a witness who reported a physical altercation between two individuals and directed them to the residence where the individuals had entered. After knocking on the door for an extended period without response, officers entered the home. Inside, they encountered an individual armed with a knife. One officer discharged his weapon, striking the individual. Law enforcement immediately began lifesaving measures and transported the individual to a local hospital for treatment.

According to agency policies, involved law enforcement officers have been placed on administrative assignment.

During the incident, all involved officers were wearing body cameras.

The DCI is leading this investigation with assistance from multiple agencies including the Wisconsin State Patrol Technical Reconstruction Unit, Dane County Sheriff’s Office, DCI’s Digital Evidence Unit, and a DCI Crime Response Specialist. All involved law enforcement personnel are fully cooperating with DCI's investigation.

DCI continues to review evidence and establish facts surrounding this incident. Once concluded, investigative reports will be submitted to the Dane County District Attorney for further action.
