HARTFORD, Conn. (Legal Newsline) - A personal injury law firm says a $300,000 settlement was stolen by unknown scam artists.

Kennedy Johnson Schwab & Roberge, P.C., a Connecticut-based law firm, filed a lawsuit July 24 in the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut against unidentified defendants referred to as John Does 1 through 20.

The complaint alleges that these defendants fraudulently intercepted email communications between the law firm and the United States Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) to misdirect a $300,000 settlement intended for one of the firm's clients.

The spoofed emails led to the funds being transferred to an unauthorized Citibank account controlled by the defendants. The law firm is seeking compensatory, statutory, and punitive damages under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act.

Christopher Drury of Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani represents the plaintiff.
