Nonprofit Law Duo Shveta Kakar and Daniel Kurtz Join Fox Rothschild in New York

Fox Rothschild is pleased to announce that Shveta Kakar and Daniel Kurtz have joined the firm’s Corporate Department as partner and counsel respectively in the New York office.

“Shveta and Daniel are seasoned attorneys who understand the unique challenges that nonprofits face and how to solve them. They’ve helped numerous nonprofits navigate thorny issues involving governance, fiduciary responsibility and an array of exempt organization tax issues, but their practice extends far beyond that to litigation and internal investigations and more for nonprofits,” said Fox’s NY Office Managing Partner, E. Bradley Gould. “We are thrilled to welcome them in New York.”

Highly experienced in nonprofit law, Shveta advises nonprofit organizations on corporate, transactional and governance issues. She routinely counsels clients on fiduciary duties of directors and officers, conducts board trainings and provides advice on a full range of issues that affect tax-exempt organizations.

She handles all aspects of the nonprofit lifecycle including incorporating, obtaining tax-exempt status, governance and compliance, to major events in corporate life. For many of her nonprofit clients, she acts as principal outside counsel, reviewing and drafting contracts, pledges, grant agreements and releases and coordinating their legal needs.

Kakar also conducts internal investigations and represents nonprofits in investigations and litigations brought by civil enforcement and regulatory authorities. She helps her clients find solutions to further their mission.

Kurtz is among the leading nonprofit lawyers in the country. He has a diverse background as a corporate lawyer, civil prosecutor and leading governance authority and was the former Assistant Attorney General-in-Charge of the New York Charities Bureau.

He has conducted numerous internal investigations and handled cases brought by civil enforcement and regulatory authorities.

Kurtz advises on corporate and governance issues, endowment administration and investment, indemnification and a variety of exempt organization tax issues. He regularly handles business combinations, including sales of assets, mergers, consolidations, and sophisticated reorganizations and restructurings.

Additionally, Kurtz acts as general counsel or principal outside counsel to many of his clients.

Kakar received her LL.M. from Harvard Law School, LL.B.,summa cum laude, from the London School of Economics, U.K. and her B.A., summa cum laude, from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University. Kurtz received his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School and his A.B. from Brown University.

Prior to joining Fox, Kakar and Kurtz were partners at Pryor Cashman LLP.
