McKenzie County Clerk of Court, Jodee Lawlar, transitioned into a dual office role taking responsibility for Williams County Clerks in October 2023. Ms. Lawlar, along with both supervisors, travels between offices providing supervision and leadership and is supported by clerk supervisors Maty Benth and McKenzie Johnson.

The Williams County Courthouse was closed in recognition of Juneteenth, providing a unique opportunity for staff in both offices. The Williams County clerks traveled to Watford City and worked side by side with the McKenzie County clerks in the courtroom and clerk’s office. Since October, the offices have collaborated closely on training, uniformity, and mutual support.

Both supervisors and staff can work interchangeably via remote means, while a short commute offers on-site opportunities that enhance interpersonal skills, training, and coverage in court and office settings.

The transition has presented challenges. However, collective efforts have fostered a cohesive team approach conducive to personal and professional growth for all involved. It has improved communication, teamwork, and support. Tools such as Zoom, messenger apps, and Miro board have provided valuable resources for completing daily tasks efficiently.

As one courthouse closes another doubles its efforts to take full advantage of this opportunity.
