California Attorney General Rob Bonta has issued a statement following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit’s ruling on access to mifepristone, a drug commonly used for medication abortion and miscarriage treatment. Research indicates that medication abortion allows individuals to receive reproductive care early when it is safest, least expensive, and least invasive. This form of abortion plays a significant role in reducing healthcare barriers, especially for those in rural and underserved areas.

“Today’s ruling overturns the Fifth Circuit’s decision to impose medically unnecessary and harmful restrictions on access to mifepristone,” said Attorney General Bonta. “Yet, the fight for reproductive rights across the country is far from over, as anti-abortion extremists stand ready to continue their meritless attacks on mifepristone and access to reproductive healthcare. No matter how many lawsuits they file or challenges they bring, they cannot change the facts: mifepristone is safe and effective—so safe, in fact, that it carries a lower risk of serious complications than taking Tylenol or undergoing a colonoscopy."

Bonta reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring California remains a haven for individuals seeking reproductive healthcare services and medication.

In January 2024, Attorney General Bonta joined a coalition of 24 state attorneys general in filing an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court supporting federal regulations and maintaining full access to mifepristone. In March 2024, he responded with a statement following the Supreme Court’s oral arguments in this case.
