North Dakota Supreme Court seeks applicants for law clerk positions

The North Dakota Supreme Court is inviting applications for law clerk positions for the 2025-2026 term. The annual salary for this full-time position is $77,160, subject to potential adjustments based on legislative actions.

Applicants must be second-year law students and are required to submit a letter of application addressed to The Honorable Daniel J. Crothers at the Judicial Wing, 1st Floor, 600 East Boulevard Avenue, Bismarck, ND 58505-0530. Additional materials include an autobiographical sketch, curriculum vitae, undergraduate transcript, LSAT score report, law school application for admission, official law school transcript up to the date of application, three letters of recommendation (including one from a faculty member), a writing sample edited only by the applicant, and three references.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States and are expected to complete their law school education and take a bar examination before beginning the clerkship. A commitment to a full one-year term from August 1, 2025, to July 31, 2026 is required. Applicants will undergo a criminal background check.

Interviews are scheduled for August 15, 2024 with selections being made in September 2024.

The primary responsibilities of the Law Clerk include providing legal research assistance to justices by preparing case summaries and legal memoranda under direct supervision. Tasks involve conducting legal research on statutes and precedents relevant to cases; reading briefs and court records; analyzing legal issues; drafting proposed opinions; compiling references; reviewing and proofreading opinions; attending hearings or trials as needed; and assisting with special projects requested by justices.

Minimum qualifications include holding a juris doctor degree from an accredited law school with experience in legal research and writing. Essential knowledge areas encompass general law principles, statutory laws, court administration policies, procedural rules across civil and criminal domains as well as appellate procedures.

Required skills involve proficiency in conducting thorough legal research using resources like Westlaw or LawDesk; drafting clear legal opinions; applying fundamental legal principles accurately; and utilizing general office software effectively.

Physical requirements are primarily sedentary but may involve limited travel. Essential functions typically require grasping objects or tools lightly up to ten pounds occasionally.
