This marks the second consecutive year Michael, Otieno and Amy have earned this recognition.
Michael is the managing principal of the firm’s Washington, D.C. Region office. He is a recognized leader on immigration, visa, and border security matters, and he is co-leader of the firm's Immigration group. Michael has held senior positions at the White House Homeland Security Council, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He served as general counsel at ICE from July 2007 through January 2009. Michael's practice focuses exclusively on immigration law. He advises corporate and individual clients on a broad range of issues, including maintaining strict workplace law compliance in an era of heightened government enforcement targeting employers, assisting clients who may encounter difficulties or delays in the visa process at United States Consular posts abroad, and government relations activities to enable business community dialogue with agency policymakers. He represents a variety of clients, ranging from large companies to private equity funds, and law firms to high profile individuals with specific ongoing immigration or visa problems. Michael earned his J.D. from The George Washington University Law School and his B.A. from the University of Michigan.
Otieno is a principal in the White Plains, New York office, and co-leader of the firm's Immigration group. He has been practicing immigration law at Jackson Lewis for almost 25 years and advises employers on business immigration strategy, counseling, and implementation. Otieno’s practice covers all aspects of employment-based immigration into the U.S. He works closely with employers to structure their immigration programs and develop long-term visa strategies for key employees in various industries, including manufacturing, telecommunications, Big Pharma, and healthcare. Otieno has extensive experience in obtaining non-immigrant work visas and employment-based immigrant visas for professional, management, and specialized skill employees. He also advises employers on I-9 and E-Verify compliance as well as helping coordinate outbound (non-U.S.) immigration matters. He has a natural facility in addressing client issues pertaining to work visas for outstanding researchers, scientists, and medical professionals. Otieno earned his Diploma of Law from the Kenya School of Law, his LL.M from the University of Cambridge and his LL.B from the University of Nairobi.
Amy is a principal in the firm’s Omaha office. As co-leader of the firm’s Immigration group, she focuses her practice on complex immigration and workplace compliance issues, especially those that intersect employment and immigration law. Amy approaches client service with the understanding that businesses need practical advice that looks at issues from multiple perspectives. Prior to joining Jackson Lewis, she served for 12 years as one of 21 directors elected to the Board of Governors of the 14,000-member American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and is the current chair of the AILA National Verification Committee, which liaises with USCIS, ICE and OCAHO on I-9, E-Verify and related worksite issues. She also served on the Board of Trustees of the American Immigration Council. Amy earned her J.D. from the University of Nebraska College of Law and her B.A. from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
