MADISON, Wis. – Today, Governor Tony Evers signed Assembly Bill 1050 into law, ensuring continued support for the Department of Justice Office of School Safety (OSS) in Wisconsin through September 2025.
Attorney General Kaul praised the OSS's approach, stating, "The Office of School Safety’s proactive and collaborative approach is helping keep kids safe when they’re at school."
Governor Evers expressed satisfaction with the bipartisan effort, saying, "I’m glad that we were able to reach a bipartisan consensus to fund these additional positions so the Office of School Safety can continue their current operations, help prevent school violence, and keep our kids safe."
The OSS's tip line has been instrumental in early intervention and preventing violence, with more than 11,000 contacts received. The Speak Up, Speak Out tipline serves as a crucial resource for students, families, educators, and staff.
The OSS, established in 2018, aims to maintain school safety and has become a vital resource for various stakeholders in Wisconsin. The office's objective is to prevent violence in schools and respond promptly to any incidents.
Acknowledgments were made to Sen. Romaine Quinn and Rep. Todd Novak for their work on Assembly Bill 1050, which was supported by both the Assembly and Senate on bipartisan votes. Governor Evers was commended for enacting the bill into law, providing bridge funding until the 2025-2027 biennial budget can secure stable funding for the OSS.
