The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is currently looking into an officer involved critical incident (OICI) that took place in Green Bay, Wis. on February 23, 2024.
According to the report, during the incident, "Steve Evaristo Ventura, age 40, fired his weapon. Ventura and Officer Skenandore then exchanged gunfire." Unfortunately, Ventura sustained injuries and despite receiving medical attention, he later passed away. The cause of Ventura's injuries is still being investigated.
Fortunately, "No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident." Following standard procedure, Green Bay Police Officer Dan Skenandore, who has been in service for 6.5 years, has been "placed on administrative leave."
The investigation is being led by the DCI, with assistance from various agencies including the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory, Wisconsin State Patrol, the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, and others. All parties involved are fully cooperating with the investigation, which is still ongoing.
DCI is currently "reviewing evidence and determining the facts of this incident" and will provide investigative reports to the Brown County District Attorney upon the conclusion of the investigation.
