Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has taken legal action against the Frisco Independent School District (“FISD”) for alleged illegal electioneering, accusing the district of using official resources to sway voters in favor of specific policies.
According to Attorney General Paxton, the Government Affairs department of Frisco ISD has been utilizing official resources to promote certain policies and political measures, a practice that violates the Texas Election Code's prohibition on the use of public funds for electioneering purposes.
In response to these allegations, the Office of the Attorney General stated that while they are currently unable to pursue criminal prosecution for Election Code violations due to a legal ruling, they may seek civil injunctive relief to prevent school districts from engaging in unauthorized attempts to influence elections. Attorney General Paxton emphasized that illegal electioneering is considered a criminal offense, and although his office cannot prosecute violators at present, local authorities could potentially take action against them.
This legal action against Frisco ISD comes in the wake of a similar lawsuit filed by Attorney General Paxton against Denton ISD for allegedly engaging in illegal electioneering. The Attorney General's office is also actively investigating other potential violations of election laws across the state.
