Officer-Involved Critical Incident in Winnebago County, Wisconsin Under Investigation

The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating an officer-involved critical incident in Winnebago County, Wis., that occurred on the evening of February 2, 2024.

According to the report, Sergeant Bryce LaLuzerne of the North Fond du Lac Police Department initiated a traffic stop in the Village of North Fond du Lac that led to a pursuit. The vehicle was eventually stopped after a Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputy deployed a tire deflation device on Interstate 41. The driver, identified as Lawrence M. Drennan, exited the vehicle and approached law enforcement, stating he had a gun. Sergeant LaLuzerne discharged his firearm, striking Drennan, who later succumbed to his injuries.

"No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident," stated the report.

Sergeant LaLuzerne, who was wearing a body camera at the time, remains on administrative duty as per department policy. The DCI is conducting a thorough investigation with the assistance of various agencies, including the Wisconsin State Patrol, Winnebago County Coroner’s Office, and DCI Crime Response Specialists.

In a statement, the DCI mentioned, "All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation." The investigation is ongoing, and further details are yet to be released.
