Attorney General Jason Miyares announced today that Kardara Antonio Miles has been sentenced to 48 years in prison for the 2016 murder of a Newport News man. Miles was convicted of first-degree felony murder, use of a firearm in the commission of murder, robbery, and use of a firearm in the commission of robbery after a three-day jury trial in September 2023. His co-defendants, Marqui Pittman and James Miles, have already been sentenced to 48 years and 55 years respectively.
The incident occurred on November 25, 2016, when Newport News police officers responded to a call for service in a Newport News apartment complex. They discovered Tommy Strayhorn lying face-down in the entryway of building 531, with gunshot wounds behind his ear and in his ankle. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Strayhorn succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
"With the sentencing of Kardara Miles, justice has finally been served for Tommy Strayhorn's family. I'm grateful for my team's hard work to ensure that those responsible for violent crime are held accountable," said Attorney General Miyares. He also commended the collaboration between local and state resources in the pursuit of safety and justice.
Marqui Pittman had previously been convicted of similar charges in December 2021 and was sentenced to 48 years of active time. James Miles, on the other hand, was convicted in November 2022 of first-degree felony murder, robbery, and attempted robbery charges. He received a sentence of 55 years.
