The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is currently investigating an officer involved critical incident that took place in the Village of Rothschild, Wis. on the evening of Wednesday, January 3, 2024.
The incident began when the Village of Rothschild Police Department received a 911 call requesting a welfare check at a residence on Urban Street. Law enforcement from Rothschild, Kronenwetter, and Everest Metro Police Departments quickly responded to the scene.
Upon entering the residence, law enforcement made contact with the subject who then fled into a bathroom. Pursuing the individual, the officers discovered that the subject was armed with a firearm. Unfortunately, the subject discharged one round, resulting in a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Law enforcement immediately provided lifesaving measures and the subject was transported to a local hospital. Tragically, the individual was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Thankfully, no law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
It is important to note that all involved officers were wearing body cameras, ensuring that there is a visual record of the events that took place. In accordance with agency policy, the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Wisconsin DOJ's DCI is leading the investigation into this officer involved critical incident. They are receiving assistance from the Marathon County Sheriff's Office, a DCI Crime Response Specialist, and members of DCI's Digital Evidence Unit. All law enforcement agencies involved are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
As of now, the investigation is still ongoing, and no further information is available. The DCI is diligently reviewing evidence and working to establish the facts of the incident. Once the investigation concludes, the investigative reports will be handed over to the Marathon County District Attorney.
