The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is currently investigating an officer involved critical incident that took place in the Town of Grand Chute, Wis. on Wednesday, January 3, 2024.

According to reports, the incident occurred in the afternoon when the Town of Grand Chute Police Department received a report of retail theft at the Fleet Farm on W. Wisconsin Ave. Upon arrival, the officers encountered the suspect who attempted to flee in a vehicle. The suspect then lost control of the vehicle, crashed into another vehicle, and ultimately collided with a tree. Despite attempts to save the suspect's life, they unfortunately passed away at the scene. Two occupants of the struck vehicle were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Fortunately, no law enforcement officers were injured during the incident. The involved officer's vehicle was equipped with a squad camera, which will be crucial in the ongoing investigation. The officer has been placed on administrative leave as per agency policy.

The DCI is leading the investigation with assistance from the Wisconsin State Patrol, a DCI Crime Response Specialist, and members of DCI's Digital Evidence Unit. All law enforcement personnel involved are cooperating fully with the DCI during this investigation. Once the investigation concludes, the investigative reports will be turned over to the Outagamie County District Attorney.

At this time, the investigation is still ongoing, and no further information is available. Media inquiries should be directed to the Wisconsin DOJ.

In the words of the Wisconsin DOJ, "The investigation is ongoing and no further information is currently available."
