The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is currently investigating an officer involved critical incident that took place in Chippewa County, Wis. on the morning of Friday, December 1, 2023.
According to reports, the incident began when a Dunn County Sheriff's deputy initiated a pursuit of a vehicle in Dunn County. The pursuit continued into Chippewa County and eventually entered the Township of Wheaton. The pursued vehicle then exited Hwy 29 onto 90th Street, where it eventually reached a dead-end. In a desperate attempt to escape, the driver turned around and crashed into a Wisconsin State Patrol cruiser that was providing assistance.
Tragically, the driver of the pursued vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. The passenger, on the other hand, sustained significant injuries and was immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment. The trooper who was in the Wisconsin State Patrol cruiser was also taken to the hospital for evaluation but was later released.
In light of this incident, the Wisconsin State Patrol and Dunn County Sheriff's Office have confirmed that they both utilize squad and body-worn cameras. These cameras may provide valuable evidence for the ongoing investigation.
The Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is leading the investigation into this officer involved critical incident, with the assistance of the Wisconsin State Patrol Technical Reconstruction Unit, DCI's Digital Evidence Unit, and a DCI Crime Response Specialist. It is worth noting that all law enforcement agencies involved in the incident are fully cooperating with DCI during the course of the investigation.
