Providence Partner Gregory Tumolo will receive the 2023 Outstanding HR Advocate Award from the Rhode Island Society for Human Resource Management (Rhode Island SHRM) at its upcoming Rhode Island Employment Law Summit on November 1st. The award recognizes the valuable contributions of one member of Rhode Island SHRM in elevating the HR profession through advocacy and engagement with state and federal public officials.

As Rhode Island SHRM describes in its announcement, Mr. Tumolo served as the organization’s Director of Legislative Affairs from 2017 to 2023. In this role, he met with state and federal legislators and provided written and oral testimony to the Rhode Island General Assembly and the United States Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division “to ensure that Rhode Island SHRM’s members’ voices were heard.” The announcement further notes, “Through his efforts, Greg played an integral role in shaping legislation to account for our members’ interests, including ensuring Rhode Island’s pay equity law contained a safe-harbor provision for employers who conducted self-evaluations of their pay practices.”

In addition, the announcement explains that as a leader in Rhode Island SHRM, Mr. Tumolo regularly updated members on important new developments in state and federal law, planned the organization’s annual Legislative Conference, and “played a key role” in creating its COVID-19 Resource Center during the early days of the pandemic. His work on the COVID-19 Resource Center earned Rhode Island SHRM the 2021 Platinum Excel Award, SHRM’s recognition for an accomplishment or initiative by a state chapter that elevates the HR profession and creates a workplace where employers and employees can thrive.

Mr. Tumolo remains an active member of Rhode Island SHRM’s Legislative Affairs Committee, through which he contributes to the organization’s “mission of engaging, educating, and advocating for HR professionals.”

“I am truly honored and humbled to receive this award. I look forward to continuing to work with my friends and colleagues on the Legislative Affairs Committee to shape employment law and public policy in our state,” said Mr. Tumolo on receiving the award.

Mr. Tumolo serves as co-chair of Lewis Brisbois’ Employment Advice & Counseling Practice. He focuses on representing and counseling employer and employee clients in a wide array of labor and employment law matters. Mr. Tumolo has substantial experience providing employers with the creative and cost-effective compliance solutions that they need to grow their businesses and effectively manage risk.
