Amy B. Cheng, a partner in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP’s Atlanta office, has been selected by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) as one of its 2023 Best Under 40 Award winners. NAPABA is the country’s largest Asian Pacific American membership organization representing the interest of 60,000 attorneys, judges, law professors, and law students.
This prestigious award recognizes individuals within the AANHPI legal community under the age of 40 who have achieved prominence and distinction in their professional field and who have demonstrated a strong commitment to AANHPI civic or community affairs.
Cheng and other honorees will be honored at an awards ceremony in Indianapolis during the NAPABA 2023 annual convention in November.
“Amy is exactly the sort of lawyer that NAPABA’s “40 Under 40” Award is intended to recognize – those rare practitioners who exhibit competence and talent from an early age, well beyond their years of practice,” said Richard H. Otera, co-chair of Nelson Mullins’ AAPI affinity group and managing partner of the firm's Los Angeles office. “A tenacious litigator and the first-ever AAPI lawyer to be elected president of the Atlanta Bar Association, Amy is a wonderful role model who has demonstrated that there are no limits for diverse female lawyers as they launch their careers.”
Cheng has defended individuals, companies, and higher education institutions in a wide range of labor and employment, business litigation, white collar defense, and government investigations matters.
She currently serves as the President of the Atlanta Bar Association for the 2023–2024 term. A member since 2017, she is the first AAPI president of the organization.
Cheng has been recognized by many other organizations for her professional excellence as a lawyer and her community service. In March, she was selected by the Atlanta Magazine, Atlanta’s premier general interest publication, as an honoree for its 2023 Women Making a Mark program for her significant contributions to the local community. In April 2022, Cheng was selected as an “On the Rise” honoree for the 2022 Georgia Legal Awards, recognizing Georgia’s most promising lawyers under the age of 40.
She is a graduate of Emory University (Bachelor of Science), the University of South Carolina Arnold School of Public Health, and Emory University School of Law. Cheng, a Charleston native, joined Nelson Mullins in 2018.
