SAN FRANCISCO (Legal Newsline) — A class action alleges Pop Secret microwave popcorn contains high levels of chemicals known as PFAS.
Serina Santiago and Ashley Wright, individually and on behalf of all others similarly situated, filed a complaint June 30 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against Campbell Soup Company and Snyder's-Lance Inc., alleging violation of California's Consumers Legal Remedies Act and other claims.
The plaintiffs allege in their class action that the defendants Pop Secret microwave popcorn contains "extremely" high levels of polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) that are harmful to humans as well as the environment. Specifically, the plaintiffs claim that testing showed Pop Secret microwave popcorn to contain 3,641 parts-per-million of fluorine content.
They allege the PFAS were intentionally added to the product or made their way into the product due to inadequate manufacturing process controls. The plaintiffs further allege that testing of other prominent brands of popcorn bags such as Newman's Own and Act II Popcorn show no detectable PFAS. They claim the defendants deceive consumers by labeling their product "premium popcorn" and made with non-GMO with no artificial preservatives or dyes, which gives the impression the product has no harmful ingredients.
The plaintiffs and the class seek monetary relief, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. They are represented by Attorney Craig Straub in Beverly Hills, California.
