ORLANDO, Fla. (Legal Newsline) — A Florida woman alleges her son's drowning was the result of an Orlando-area rowing club's lack of safety protocols.

Doreen Sane, as personal representative of the Estate of Langston Rodriguez-Sane filed a complaint Dec. 22 in Orange County Circuit Court against Power Ten Rowing Cub Inc., doing business as North Orlando Rowing Club, College Park Lions Club Inc., and US Rowing Association alleging wrongful death, negligence and other claims.

According to Sane's complaint, her son Langston, who was 11 years old at the time, began rowing lessons with the North Orlando Rowing Club on Lake Fairview on a property owned and maintained by the Lions Club. She alleges that he was at a practice session on Sept. 15, 2022, when inclement weather including lightning and turbulent water began to approach the lake and caused the boat that Langston and five other rowers were in to capsize.

Sane alleges her son's body was retrieved from the water and brought back to shore, but a defibrillator to be used on him was inoperable and that he died three days later. Sane claims the defendants failed to alert the rowers of the inclement weather and failed to supervise, instruct or guide her son and the other rowers. She also claims the defendants failed to have adequate safety measures in place, access her son's swim-skill level or have proper resuscitation equipment.

Sane seeks monetary relief, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. She is represented by Andrew Yaffa and Natasha Cortes of Grossman Roth Yaffa Cohen PA in Coral Gables, Florida and Simon Wiseman of The Wiseman Law Firm in Orlando.
