ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Legal Newsline) - ConocoPhillips Alaska is going to court to find out who scammed it out of $25,000 it was trying to donate to a nonprofit.

The company filed suit against a John Doe on Oct. 19 in Alaska federal court to recover $25,000 it intended to give to the ANCSA Regional Association, which promotes economic growth for Alaska Native regional corporations.

The group emailed ConocoPhillips' community investment department in April 2, 2021, to ask for money to produce a 30-minute video showing the history of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and Alaska Native regional corporations, as part of its 50th anniversary.

ConocoPhillips agreed to give $25,000 and emails between the two groups ensued. However, someone accessed an ARA employee's email and asked that the funds be sent to a different bank account than what was previously agreed to.

"Plaintiff attempted to obtain information leading to the identity of Defendant from (Navy Federal Credit Union), but NFCU declined to provide such information without a court-authorized subpoena," the complaint says.

"Therefore, concurrent with the filing of this complaint, Plaintiff is serving NFCU with a third-party subpoena requesting all relevant information concerning the account."
