CHICAGO (Legal Newsline) - Kelloggs' Special K-brand nut bars do not contain enough cranberries and almonds, a class action lawsuit says.

Plaintiff Misha Leschiner filed suit July 3 in Chicago federal court over chewy nut bars that purport to be flavored cranberry almond but instead give customers the impression they have "a greater and absolute relative amount of cranberries and almonds" than they do.

Lawyer Spencer Sheehan is pursuing the case and says consumers seek cranberry and almond products because of their health benefits. The top ingredients, in order, are peanuts, dried cranberries, raisins, corn syrup and almonds.

"The front label fails to show pictures of peanuts and shows only almonds as a visible nut ingredient in the bar, noticeable by their shape and brown skin," the suit says. "In other countries, Defendant sells a near-identical version of the product where the front label contains pictures of peanuts in addition to almonds."

A lab analysis shows the bars are 20% peanuts and 9% almonds, the suit says. Also, the bars are 15% cranberries and 14% raisins, the suit says.
