Roller-skating rink faces lawsuit over trip on glow stick

ORLANDO, Fla. (Legal Newsline) - A discarded glow stick tripped up a roller-skater and caused his fall, says a lawsuit against a Florida skating rink.

Astro Skating Center of Orlando should have known the glow sticks it sold would create a hazard, William Schichler argues in a lawsuit filed Feb. 24 in Orange County Circuit Court. The glow sticks were attached to necklaces.

Schichler says on April 3, staff at Astro Skate failed to safely operate the rink during a theme party that included glow sticks and other glow products.

"Defendant knew or should have known that when business invitees brought the glow sticks... out on the skating rink that some of those business invitees would drop the glow sticks... on the floor of the skating rink, creating a dangerous and/or hazardous condition..." the suit says.

Turning off the rink lights to enhance the glow didn't help either, Schichler says. He does not specify what injuries he suffered when the necklace on a glow stick wrapped around his roller skate wheels.
