NEW YORK (Legal Newsline) – Disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein recently sued his former law firm for more than $1 million over its representation of him while facing sexual assault criminal charges.
Weinstein sued Abelson Herron Halpern and lawyer Michael Abelson on Jan. 3 in New York County Supreme Court. The suit says Weinstein hired the firm to secure insurance coverage for charges being brought against him.
Weinstein is alleged to have assaulted nearly 100 women and is serving a 23-year prison sentence for rape.
His lawsuit says when one of his criminal charges was dropped, his insurance coverage was terminated – something the Abelson firm should have known would happen. He now wants that firm to pay $1 million plus interest as compensation.
“Abelson and AHH negligently, carelessly, and/or intentionally failed to engage in proper legal research and analysis, which constitutes legal malpractice,” the suit says.
Weinstein is represented by Gary Kavulich of Kavulich & Associates.
