SAN FRANCISCO (Legal Newsline) – Shampoo made by Johnson & Johnson contains ingredients that cause hair loss and/or scalp irritation, a class action lawsuit says.
Three plaintiffs firms - Shub Law Firm, Sciolla Law Firm and Whitfield Bryson – teamed to sue the company March 5 in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. They say an ingredient known as DMDM hydantoin is known to slowly leach formaldehyde when coming into contact with water.
The product line at issue is OGX shampoos and conditioners.
“Defendant failed to properly warn consumers of the risks and dangers attendant to the use of such a strong ingredient on their hair and scalp – even well after Defendant knew or should have known of the Products’ hazards,” the complaint says.
“Defendant continued to conceal the dangers of the Products by failing to appropriately and fully recall the Products, by continuing to claim the Products were safe when properly applied, and by failing to warn consumers of the dangers attendant to the Products’ use.”
