Lawsuit says Aldi's cheese isn't actually smoked

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Legal Newsline) – Aldi has been sued over a cheese product it claims is smoked.

The lawsuit filed Jan. 27 in New York federal court by lawyer Spencer Sheehan says “Smoke White Cheddar – Deli Sliced Cheese" that is sold in more than 2,000 stores is not actually smoked.

Instead, the lawsuit claims, Aldi adds a smoke flavor.

“Liquid smoke flavor also contains numerous additives and has been associated with detrimental health impacts,” the suit says.

“Whether a food is flavored by ‘liquid smoke flavor’ or from being smoked is information consumers rely on when making quick purchasing decisions at the grocery store.”

Customers are misled into paying more for a product they expect to be actually smoked, the case says.
