Hair-smoother contains formaldehyde and causes hair loss, says lawsuit

Federal Court
Tresemme

SAN FRANCISCO (Legal Newsline) – A new class action lawsuit says TRESemme Keratin shampoo products cause significant hair loss and scalp irritation.

Kendra Libbey filed her case through lawyers at Whitfield Bryson against Unilever Home & Personal Care on Nov. 16 in California federal court.

It complains that DMDM hydantoin is known to slowly leach formaldehyde when coming into contact with water.

“DMDM hydantoin has been used as a preservative in Unilever products for more than a decade; however, the use of DMDM hydantoin as a preservative creates an entirely unnecessary risk because various safer natural alternatives exist,” the lawsuit says.

“As such, the products are rendered dangerous and unsafe for sale as over-the-counter hair smoothing shampoo products.”
