Data breach leads to lawsuit against Claire's

Federal Court
Databreach

CHICAGO (Legal Newsline) – Claire’s Stores is being sued after reporting a data breach in July.

Attorneys at Wolf Haldenstein filed the lawsuit Sept. 18 in Chicago federal court after the company notified customers and state attorneys general that hackers gathered customers’ information from at least April 7 through June 12.

“The stolen (information) has great value to hackers due to its thoroughness and the numbers involved: It is likely that this breach stole the full payment card information for tens of thousands of customers,” the suit says.

“For example, the Washington State Attorney General reports that 1,166 Washingtonians were affected, and the Indiana Attorney General reports 1,257.”

The proposed class action doesn’t allege customers’ information was used by third parties, only that Claire’s failed to protect it and warn customers of “inadequate information security practices.”
