WASHINGTON (Legal Newsline) – A consumer group says Zoom isn’t as secure as it claims to be.
Consumer Watchdog filed a lawsuit against Zoom Video Communications on Aug. 10 in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Zoom removed the case to D.C. federal court on Sept. 9.
The lawsuit says Zoom offered “end-to-end encryption” to customers worried about cybersecurity.
“Unfortunately, Zoom’s claims that communications on its platform were end-to-end encrypted were false. Zoom only used the phrase ‘end-to-end encryption’ as a marketing device to lull consumers and businesses into a false sense of security,” the suit says.
“The reality is that Zoom is, and has always been, capable of intercepting and accessing any and all of the data that users transmit on its platform – the very opposite of end-to-end encryption.”
The lawsuit also worries that Zoom’s servers are located in China and the company has “meaningful ties” to the government there.
Attorneys at Consumer Watchdog filed the case along with Edelson PC of Chicago.
