PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Legal Newsline) – NBCUniversal is facing a class action lawsuit that says it sells the personal information of its customers.

That info includes names and addresses, as well as personal viewing information, a lawsuit filed Aug. 27 in Rhode Island federal court says. The company’s alleged actions violate the Video Privacy Protection Act and Rhode Island’s Video, Audio, and Publication Rental Privacy Act, the suit says.

The VPPA provides for $2,500 per violation and the RIVRPA allows for $250 per violation.

“(W)hile Defendant profits handsomely from its unauthorized sale, rental, transmission, and/or disclosure of its customers’ personal viewing information, it does so at the expense of its customers’ privacy and their statutory rights…” the suit says.

Pursuing the case are McIntyre Tate of Providence, Hedin Hall of Miami and Bursor & Fisher in New York.
