BOSTON (Legal Newsline) – Rental property owners are suing Massachusetts over its moratorium on evictions during the coronavirus pandemic.
Marie Baptiste and Mitchell Matorin filed their challenge July 15 in federal court that claims a provision that prevents them from evicting cash-strapped tenants is unconstitutional.
“The legislation was spearheaded by tenant advocacy groups such as City Life/Vida Urbana who organized a well-coordinated online and social media campaign,” the lawsuit says.
“No legislative record exists of any public hearing or testimony taken on the bill, despite the fact that it constitutes one of the most unprecedented legislation actions concerning rental housing in Massachusetts history.”
The lawsuit complains there was no study on the impacts of the moratorium.
