SAN FRANCISCO (Legal Newsline) - A class action has been filed against the maker of the Digital Drops app that sold digital anime stickers.

Lawyers at Reese LLP sued Ellation, doing business as Crunchyroll, and Rare Bits Inc. on June 5 in California federal court, arguing that the company misled customers about how long they could use the app and the items they purchased.

Crunchyroll launched Digital Drops around August 2019 and claimed its anime stickers were "rare" and "highly collectible," the lawsuit says.

In February, Crunchyroll shut down the servers running the app and told customers that their products would no longer be accessible, the lawsuit says.

"Defendant Crunchyroll, as one of the world’s largest online retailers of anime products, leveraged its reputation and brand recognition to further entice consumers to purchase its purported highly collectible anime digital content, which consumers believed would be available to them forever like any other purchased product," the lawsuit says.
