Napa Valley vineyard says COVID-19 shutdown order not fair

OAKLAND, Calif. (Legal Newsline) – A Northern California vineyard is suing Gov. Gavin Newsom because its tasting room is still ordered to be closed.

Caymus Vineyards, which touts a Cabernet Sauvignon that is the only wine ever to win Wine Spectator’s “Wine of the Year" twice, says Stage 2 of Newsom’s reopening plan is harming it. Caymus filed its case May 28 in Oakland federal court.

Winery tasting rooms can reopen with certain restrictions if they provide meals.

“The orders provide no explanation for this requirement,” the lawsuit says. “Any winery that does not – or, under local ordinances, cannot – provide such meals may not reopen.”

Wineries dedicated to testing must keep their rooms closed while toy stores can open, the lawsuit complains.

“The law… must be applied fairly and equally to all businesses,” the suit says.
