BOSTON (Legal Newsline) – A consumer has filed a class action against Colgate-Palmolive and Tom's of Maine alleging they falsely represent their toothpaste and deodorant products as "natural."

Angela Munsell, individually and on behalf of all others similarly situated, filed a complaint Dec. 13 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts against Colgate-Palmolive Co., and Tom's of Maine Inc., alleging violation of Massachusetts and Rhode Island law.

Munsell alleges in the class action that Tom's of Maine brand toothpaste and deodorant products "contain a host of artificial, synthetic and/or chemically processed ingredients" such as glycerin, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfate, aluminum cholorohydrate and other non-natural ingredients. She also claims the defendants have been deceiving customers by "mislabeling and misrepresenting the products as natural" in order to "induce" customers to buy them at a "price premium."

Munsell seeks restitution, a trial by jury, interest and all other proper relief. She and the putative class are represented by Edward Haber, Ian McLoughlin and Adam Stewart of Shapiro Haber & Urmy LLP in Boston.
