DENVER — A Colorado court has ordered a heating and cooling company operating in the state to pay $1.7 million for installing thousands of furnaces, hot water heaters and air conditioning units without obtaining building permits, causing potential hazards to consumers.

According to the Colorado Attorney General's Office, Mile High Heating & Cooling along with its owner, violated the state's Consumer Protection Act by installing the unpermitted units. One of the consumer's homes that had the unpermitted units installed began to fill with carbon monoxide, forcing the homeowner to evacuate.

“I am relieved that the court has put these defendants out of the HVAC business for good,” Colorado Attorney General Cynthia Coffman said in a statement. “There is absolutely no place in Colorado for businesses that jeopardize the health and safety of consumers, and my office will vigorously prosecute anyone who engages in this type of egregious behavior.”

The court, which also found Mile High Heating & Cooling had technicians without the necessary safety and skill level, banned the company's manager and owner from selling and installing furnaces in Colorado.
