RICHMOND — Virgina Attorney General Mark Herring is applauding the recent Tribune Media Company announcement that it will discontinue pursuing a merger with Sinclair Broadcast Group.

In a recent statement https://www.oag.state.va.us/media-center/news-releases/1251-august-9-2018-herring-welcomes-termination-of-sinclair-tribune-merger , Herring welcomed Tribune's announcement saying the merger would have allowed Sinclair to control more than 200 stations taht would reach almost 75 percent of U.S. households.

“This proposed merger would have given a single entity unprecedented control over the news, entertainment, and information received by millions of Americans," Herring said in his statement.  "Its demise is good news for American consumers and for the health of our democracy.

"My team and I had been investigating the merger for months and were prepared to force significant concessions from the company or take legal action to block the merger. Thankfully, that will no longer be necessary.”

Herring had asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to not change any of its rules that would facilitate the Sinclair/Tribune merger while leading an investigation into the merger.
