San Antonio alleges Texas violated immigration laws

SAN ANTONIO (Legal Newsline) — San Antonio and other Texas groups are suing council member are suing Texas and state government officials, alleging violations of federal law.

The city of San Antonio, council member Rey A. Saldana, the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education, La Union Del Pueblo Entero and the Workers Defense Project filed a complaint June 1 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas against the state of Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton, alleging they signed a law that limits the enforcement of immigration laws.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs were damaged from the approval and enforcement of SB 4, which removes local government's authority to enact immigration policies.

The plaintiffs seek to declare SB 4 is unconstitutional, an injunction against the defendants, court costs and all further relief the court grants. They are represented by attorneys Thomas A. Saenz, Nina Perales, Marisa Bono, Celina Moreno and Andrea Senteno of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund in San Antonio and by Deborah Lynne Klein of the city of San Antonio.
