Rhode Island accuses multiple oil companies of contaminating groundwater

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Legal Newsline) — Rhode Island is suing dozens of oil companies, alleging violation of state and federal law.

The state of Rhode Island filed a complaint April 27 in Rhode Island Superior Court against multiple oil companies, alleging they caused contamination in groundwater.

This complaint was filed April 27 in Rhode island Superior Court, and the defendants removed it to U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island on May 11.

According to the complaint, Rhode Island was damaged on behalf of the general public who will suffer due to the contamination of the water. The plaintiff alleges the defendants used MTBE in their products, despite knowing it could cause contamination and damage to the environment.

Rhode Island seeks trial by jury, compensatory damages, punitive damages attorney fees and court costs, prejudgment interest and all just, proper and equitable relief. It is represented by Rebecca Partington of the Rhode Island Department of the Attorney General in Providence.
